Brief Project Description: The ECF Glove Box Examination Line designed for use at the Naval Reactors Facility (NRF) encompassed a wide variety of engineering disciplines as follows: ventilation, fire protection, electrical, structural, instrumentation and controls, and rigging and hoisting. The codes and guidelines adhered to during engineering design were: Guideline for Gloveboxes – Second Edition (AGS-G001-1998), National Electrical Code (NEC), International Building Code (IBC), and the customer’s engineering specification. The Glovebox Examination Line was designed to provide a means of decontaminating equipment/materials used in radioactive environments. All design aspects were critical in providing a safe and clean work environment for operators. · The ventilation, instrumentation, and controls were designed to provide a negative pressure within the gloveboxes, even during activation of the fire suppression system. The ventilation design also allowed in-service filter change-out. · Electrical power was provided inside and outside of each glovebox. · Lighting was designed to supply a required minimum illumination at adjustable angles to the work surface. · The glovebox structures were designed to meet the seismic ratings for the region of installation. · Rigging and hoisting were designed to prevent any warping or damage to the gloveboxes during transportation and installation that might render them unfit for service. |
