Brief Description of Project:  

Alabama Power desired access platforms for servicing booms on its fleet of boom trucks.  In order to properly position a platform so one could service the boom trucks, one side of the platform was required to be left unobstructed so the platform could be rolled into place and straddle the hood of the truck.  For portability and ease of use, the platform was to be mounted on casters.

Snow’s Machine & Welding, Inc. in Mobile, AL tasked Havlovick Engineering Services, Inc. (HES) with the engineering design and detailing of the platform.  The overall dimensions of the platform were 128” long by 96” wide by 82” clear height from the ground to the underside of the platform.  The design of the boom truck access platform included ensuring conformance with IBC 2003 requirements for the platform and for the 30” wide access ladder attached along the 128” side.  The desired total load for the platform was 2,000 lbs.  The platform was constructed of aluminum plate and structural members.  

A Finite Element Analysis (FEA) model was created to analyze the platform under the specified loading.  Once all engineering was completed, the platform was modeled in AutoCAD using 3D solid modeling techniques.  From there, shop fabrication and detail drawings were produced so that Snow’s Machine & Welding, Inc. could begin fabrication of the platforms.
