Brief Description of Project:  

The Machinery Space Firepump Compartment was a design and installation of pumps, piping and controls to provide an automated fire suppression system for the DD(X) project.  This project required the following engineering disciplines:  mechanical, fluids, electrical, and instrumentation and controls.

• The mechanical and fluid components of the system were designed to allow either pump to serve the firemain individually or together as required by the load.

• Electrical distribution for the facility was modified to accommodate the significant increase in electrical load required by two 460 VAC, 600 AMP pumps.

• The pumps were automatically controlled by variable frequency drives (VFDs) to maintain a constant pressure in the system.  Pressure setpoints or manual overrides were available locally at the VFDs or in two separate remote locations.  A sleep mode was also integrated into the system to prevent an overpressure situation.

The complete system was also managed and installed by HES personnel, assuring customer satisfaction.
